The Myle Bible

The Myle Bybel is nothing else than a series of guidelines that the collaborators of De Myle Krant will always keep in mind in order to arrive at high-quality research results and publications.

Quality of our genea-logical research

Collaborators will always keep in mind that they are engaged in a search for the truth. Therefore, they will apply the guidelines below in their research, and the results of their work will be checked by the other employees against on the same guidelines.

Collaborators will:

  • note the source for each piece of information they collect;

  • test any hypothesis or theory against reliable evidence and reject that hypothesis or theory which is not substantiated by the evidence;

  • seek original records, or reproduced images of them if there is reasonable assurance that they have not been altered, as a basis for their research conclusions;

  • use compilations, reports, and published work, whether paper or electronic, primarily to provide direction so that the original records can be found, or to contribute to the critical analysis of evidence discussed in them;

  • write something as fact only if it is supported by convincing evidence, and identify this evidence when the fact is communicated to others;

  • limit with words such as "probable" or "possible" any claim based on less than convincing evidence and list the reasons that led to the conclusion that something is probable or possible;

  • avoid misleading other researchers by knowingly or carelessly distributing or publishing inaccurate information;

  • carefully and honestly state the results of their own research and recognize the use of the work of other researchers;

  • recognize the collegial nature of genealogy research by making their work available to others through publication, or placing copies in relevant libraries or repositories, and by welcoming critical comments;

  • are open to new evidence or comments from others on their work and conclusions they have drawn.

Protection of personal data

Since genealogy collects data about people, we need to make sure that we respect the legislation regarding the protection of personal data. We must adequately protect that data, especially those relating to living persons, and prevent such data from being made public.

Quality of our publications

All publications made public by De Myle Krant will be checked for a number of aspects before publication, such as:

  • grammatically correct;

  • factually correct;

  • protection of personal data;

  • pleasant presentation.

This check will be carried out by employees who have not themselves contributed to the creation of the publication.
